Holy Trinity Orthodox Church Hosts Open House East Meadow, NY – Members of Holy Trinity Orthodox Church here remembered those who perished on September 11, 2001 with a memorial service on Saturday, September 10. The service was a highlight of the parish’s Open House which was organized as a way to introduce the parish to the local community. “While it has been ten years since the tragic events of 9/11 many are still grieving,” said Father Martin Kraus, rector of the parish, “As Orthodox Christians we remember those who lost their lives along with those who suffered and survived.” Town of Hempstead officials, Nassau Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter, State Assemblyman Thomas McKevitt, and Nassau County Legislator Norma Gonsalves joined members and friends of the parish to pray for those who lost their lives. In addition to the memorial service, the Open House featured a keynote address by the Archpriest Sergei Glagolev, On living as Orthodox Christians in 21st Century America. During his talk, Father Sergei outlined the importance of making the commandments of our Lord a part of our daily lives. “Blessed are the people who know the festal shout, beloved ones,” Father Sergei said, adding, “It’s our calling to know the festal shout and be witnesses before others with the love of Christ.” A prayer service for the sick was celebrated, and those in attendance were invited to share names of friends and loved ones who are suffering after-effects from the 9/11 tragedy, as well as those afflicted by cancer and other debilitating diseases. “There are a lot of people in need and we as Orthodox Christians want to share what we have to help them,” said Father Martin. Throughout the day, displays and resources were available from dozens of local county and community organizations. A food drive gathered resources for the local LI Cares food pantry, with educational activities and carnival games for kids of all ages. Presentations on Orthodox music and iconography were also made available, along with information about Orthodox Christianity and Holy Trinity Church. “We were humbled to open our doors and welcome people into our church,” Father Martin said, adding, “We had guests who thanked us for this opportunity to come together and pray, and get to know more about the parish – that is a wonderful thing.”
